RCM Museum

Explore the musical treasures of London’s newest Museum

The Royal College of Music Museum contains the earliest known guitar, the earliest stringed keyboard instrument and the most recognised portraits of Joseph Haydn and Farinelli. Learn about these and 56 other fascinating instruments specially chosen from the RCM’s designated collection of over 14,000 items.

Following a £3.6million investment from Heritage Lottery Fund, the Museum has undergone a complete redevelopment and opened to the public in October 2021.

Temporary exhibition: Hidden Treasures of the RCM Collections

Discover unique treasures from the RCM Museum and Library collections. Featuring long unseen artworks, historic manuscripts, and unusual and ingenious musical instruments, this exhibition shares rarely seen objects and stories hand-picked from the thousands of objects and stories from the RCM's internationally outstanding collections.

Opening hours

Royal College of Music Museum

  • Tuesday–Friday: 10.15am–5.45pm (last entry 5.15pm)
  • Saturday–Sunday: 11am–6pm (last entry 5.30pm). During the weekend the Museum closes for lunch between 1pm and 2pm.
  • Closed on Mondays.

The Museum will be closed during the Christmas holidays on 20 December 2022 through to 3 January 2023.

Wolfson Centre in Music and Material Culture

The Wolfson Centre provides access to the Royal College of Music's collections for the purpose of research by RCM professors, students and external researchers. Visits are available by appointment.
